How to Play the Subliminal Game

The game's setting is derived from the urban story The Backrooms. This book allows you to recall significant events while placing you in a stifling liminal state.

While enemies wait in the shadows, you must use perspective and light to solve puzzles and survive.

The game is made with Unreal Engine 5, and Lumen and Nanite technologies are used to make the lighting, shadows, and scenery very detailed.

You play the game from the first-person point of view. To find a way out, you have to pay close attention to everything in the space.

Controls

  • Use the WASD or arrow keys to move the character.
  • If you have a mouse, look around you.
  • Shift: When you have to run away, go fast.
  • Jump over stuff in space.
  • E: Perform actions with switches, goods and tools.
  • Use the right mouse button to move unique sections or solve issues.

How to Win

  • Always pay close attention to the lighting, shadows and large items in the area, these are frequently the keys to problems.
  • Don’t just go downward the main path, there are many surprises and hidden endings tucked away in easy-to-miss spots.
  • Pay attention to the codes and additional data that you find throughout the levels. They often have an immediate impact on how far you may advance in the next level.
  • Smile is after you, don’t forget to look ahead, not behind.

When Memories Become Nightmares

The thing that impressed me the most about Subliminal was how uncomfortable I felt long after I finished playing the game. This is a well crafted horror psychological game with well thought out levels, endings and mood. Mod backrooms fans should definitely give it a go.
