Five Nights at Freddy's 4 Halloween Edition is a point-and-click sit-and-survival horror game that puts you in a dark bedroom where you can't move. You can only use your ears and a handheld torch to fight off the scary Halloween monsters that are hiding everywhere.
Your simple goal is still to make it to 6 AM. But when new characters come in, it's even more important to know when to listen, use your torch, and check every part of the room. It's a new challenge for people who like scary games that keep you on the edge of your seat and reward you for being patient and paying close attention.
What's Different in the Five Nights at Freddy's 4 Halloween Edition?
The major changes are that some well-known characters have been swapped out for ones that are more Halloween-themed. There are some that play by the same rules as the originals and others that change the way you act in certain ways.
Robots for Halloween
- Jack-O-Bonnie takes the place of Nightmare Bonnie and plays the same way.
- Jack-O-Chica takes the place of Nightmare Chica and plays by the same general rules. When the cupcake walks into the room, its jump scare is changed to a pumpkin effect.
- Nightmare Mangle: He or she stands in for Nightmare Foxy. Noise from its radio can block out other sounds when it's in the closet, making it harder to pick up on important sounds.
- Nightmarionne: Takes the place of Nightmare in fights that need it, and it works the same way in general.
- Nightmare Balloon Boy: Shows up in the minigame between Nites 1–4 instead of Plushtrap. The minigame still has the same timer and rewards.
Which characters don't change?
Not every animatronic gets a new look for Halloween. The Freddles, Nightmare Freddy, and Nightmare Fredbear have not changed. Because they are there, you still need to listen carefully and check the room as you would in the standard form.

How to play Five Nights at Freddy's 4 Halloween Edition
Every night, stay alive by listening for sounds, checking every room, and being careful how you respond to the Halloween animatronics.
- Listen Before Shining the Flashlight: Pay close attention before shining your flashlight on either door. Do not close doors that are not needed, as this could bring Bonnie or Chica closer. You can hear important sounds better with headphones, but Nightmare Mangle's radio static might block out other sounds.
- Check the Bed, Doors and Closet: Pay attention to the closet, the bed and both hallways instead of just one area at a time. Checking the wardrobe is especially important for Nightmare Mangle because its sounds and actions are different from those of Nightmare Foxy.
- Stay alive until 6 AM: A normal night lasts for six minutes. Pay close attention to sounds, plan your steps carefully, and don't waste time checking the doors or using the torch when you don't need to.
- Find out about the Halloween animatronics: Dark Nightmare Mangle can't be seen in the hallway with the torch, but it can still be scared away by the light. Its loud radio static can block out other sounds when it goes into the closet. When Nightmarionne is active, she makes a music box sound, and in the minigame between nights, Nightmare Balloon Boy plays instead of Plushtrap. If you finish the minigame, you can get the standard two-hour reward for the next night.
Game modes and content that can be unlocked
The main storyline and extra tasks from the full game are in FNAF 4 Halloween Edition. Nights 1–5, the sixth night, and nightmare mode can all be played. When you enter the code 2020 and have achieved exactly three stars, you can also do the 20/20/20/20 challenge.
The game also has four challenge modes, character and jump scare displays in Extras, and story minigames.
In blind mode, the screen goes blank, so you can only hear what's going on.
Mad Freddy: When the bed stays dark, Freddy gets scarier.
Foxy starts in the closet within the first ten seconds of Insta-Foxy.
Every Nightmare: Nightmare stays at level 20 all night. You can play this challenge along with Blind Mode, but not with Mad Freddy or Insta-Foxy.
The Halloween Edition of FNAF 4 has endings, story stars, challenge stars, and other material that can be unlocked. The Halloween Edition and the regular Full Edition keep track of progress in different ways, so progress made in one version does not carry over to the other.
